Question: Canon 17-40L good for landscape!?
Is the Canon 17-40L good for landscapes even with the crop factor when used on a Rebel XT!? It seems like it won't be zoomed out enough!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Even with the crop factor, the 17-40mm f4L would be a good landscape lens!. Although you aren't working at 17mm's in real time, it's still better than say a 24mm lens- which would be much less-wide angle, with the crop factor or not!. Basically, even with the crop factor 17mm's is quite wide enough!. If you really want wide-angle, get the Canon 10-22mm, it's not an L lens, but it's wider, and fairly sharp:

With the crop factor, anything on that lens past 25mm or so starts getting dicey!. To be honest, though, it really depends on what you're shooting!. I have a 10-22 lens I use on a Rebel XT, and have shot landscapes all through that range, so your lens has some overlap there!.

The trick to landscapes is a good tripod, small apertures, and most importantly, timing!. I'll take a sunset with a point-and-shoot over some midday harshly lit mess taken with a full frame camera!. Magic hour is magic for a reason, and saving key shots for sunsets or sunrises will pay off!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Since your camera has a "crop factor" of 1!.6, the 17-40mm lens will perform as a 27!.2-64mm lens!. The 10-22mm (16-35!.2) might be a better choice!.

For the very best landscapes, have your camera mounted on a tripod and leveled!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
