We can use the items within a photo to assist in determining a timeframe/era of the photo!. Every photo has a setting or backdrop and usually clothing and hairstyles, sometimes such things as old cars, household items, signs, buildings and maybe even a photographers stamp or logo!.

When looking at clothing, menswear is all about the details, coat collars, neckties, vests, hats and footwear!. Women’s styles changed more frequently, consider dress/skirt lengths & widths, fabric choices, sleeve styles, necklines and collar styles, waistlines, sizes & styles, hats and footwear!.

If you have other photographs that are dated, begin by comparing them to one you’re attempting to date!. There are sites on the internet that will aid in your research!. Possibly even eBay stores--vintage clothing, vintage auto posters, etc!. Search for fashion sites, era photographs, vintage costumes and history sites!.

Other things to consider, types of photographs, when a process was used and when it was popular!.

(Some types include:
Carbon Prints -- introduced in 1839 -- they were too time consuming & difficult, there are few
Daguerreotype -- 1839-1860, images were made on a light-sensitive silver-coated metallic plate--a metal support of thin copper, with a highly polished mirror-like coating of silver!. Common sizes were 2? x 3? inches and rarely any larger than 6? x 8?, which was whole-plate size!.
Salt Prints -- 1839-1860
Albumen Print -- introduced in 1850, most albumen prints were mounted onto stiffer papers and cardboards
Ambrotype -- 1851-1880
Flash photography was introduced in 1884, thus, most photos prior to this time were taken outdoors!.
Tintypes -- 1854-1930's
Crayon Portraits -- 1860's through the turn of the 20th century -- usually life sized
Platinotypes -- 1880 and was popular until about 1930)

You can find more information about the attributes of each on the internet!.

Good Luck!

Depends on the subject!. One can get some fairly accurate dating by observing hair and clothing styles, makes and models of automobiles and other elements that give an indication of when the photo was taken!.

More sophisticated (and expensive) methods include a chemical analysis of the paper and photoemulsions used!.

Carbon dating would not work so well because the time from the invention of photograpy and the present is too brief!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
