Here is a side-by-side comparison of the cameras you have listed:
http://www!.dpreview!.com/reviews/compare_!.!.!.

For a beginner, I think you should go with the D40!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Functionally they're all about the same as far as ease of use is concerned!.

D 50 - oldest, least capable
D 70 - next oldest!. The 70S is okay, but there were lots of problems with the original D70!.
D 40 - newest, lightest, cheapest, easiest to break, but most up to date technologically!. (Just don't expect it to last more than a couple of years)

D 80 - hands down, the best of this bunch! By a long shot!. Higher quality construction and components than all three of the others!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For casual photography, without a single doubt, the D40 is the right one from this list!. It's not so large that it would be a burden to carry!. There are very few limitations if your principle use will be as a top quality snapshooter!. I won't give a long list or even my stock answer, but I will jus tbe one among what I know will be a crown of people recommending the D40 as the best choice for your stated purpose!.

If they tell you anything else, ignore them!.

Yes, the others are all "better," but not for what YOU intend to do with the camera!.

Haha!Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you want to spend under £400 on a great camera, easy to use, shake reduction, dust & water seals, 10!.2mp, excellent kit lens, 8gb sdhc card supplied, auto/manual focus, lots of pre-set shooting modes, then message me, and I will send you a link to my profile page on http://www!.redbubble!.com/ so you can see what my camera can do!.
Nikon is to expensive, apart from the toy D40, and you are only paying for the name!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

How a camera feels in your hands is also important,I find any entry level cameras feel a bit plasticy and small,my choice was the D200 which is still around and a better performer, although it lacks the instant picture modes even my 12 yr old granddaughter can get brilliant results with it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well, teh d40 is a waste of money, its a plastic toy!.!.!.
the D80, is an incredible tool, but its 1300 quid with a lens!.!.!. (or maybe 2)

step away from teh dream list, and stop buying something based on the badge it wears!.!.!. photography isnt just about having a name!.!.!. read any reviews on the D40 and youl lrealise this, oh and connons break!.!.!. look on ebay and see just how many broken ones there are for sale!.!.!.

i suggest you look at the olympus E series!.!. i have 2, and they haven never broken!.!. (in 5yrs) my 35mm olympus kit is over 30yrs old, and none of that has ever broken either!.!.!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I own a D50 myself, and LOVE it!.
Its a lot better of a camera then people have said it to be!.
It also can be found cheap(cheap for a DSLR anyway!.!.!.) on such sites as Ebay!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You may want to go down the comparison table and see which one has the features you want!. The chart starts about halfway through this document
