The self portrait requires a few things:

1!. YOU!.
2!. A focal point where you expect to be once you set your timer and go into the frame to be photographed!.
3!. Some way to determine the 'subject to camera distance' that you have to be in so that your picture is crisp and clear!.
4!. Suitable lighting!.!.!. side lighting maybe from a window (overcast days are best)!.!.!. avoid sunlight like it was a plague!.
5!. A tripod to set your camera up on and a tape measure to measure the spot where your eyes will be (that is the critical point of focus you want)!.

The time to put this all together and take the shot!.

Sit in a chair preferably diagonal to the camera and turn your head towards it!.!.!. try setting the expression you want to capture in a mirror before you actually commit to the shot!.!.!. I find that for a sultry look, having my model look down with her head slightly then look up only with the eyes into the camera gives a powerful yet sexy 'come here' look!.!.!. it's pretty easy to master too!.

See where you are sitting in relation to the seat of the chair then take your tape measure and extend it from the seat to your eye level!. Lock it so it doesn't retract and leave it sitting on the seat in the position where you think you will have your eyes and focus your camera on the tip of that ruler!. Make sure your camera is on the tripod at eye level (there's nothing worse than doing a portrait where you are looking up into someone's nostrils)!.

I think you have the idea from there!.

I'd love to know how you make out with it!.!.!. g!.alanfink@yahoo!.com

Well im almost in the same boat as you, im an aspiring photogapher and I LOVE fashion photography, I think from my experience If you want to have a connection between the photo and the viewer looking at the photo you can look at the camera but if you want to create an atmosphere in the photograph and build tension or emotion then look away at the camera, but try to not look too stage more of a candid photo!.

Id try looking at different photographs both looking away and towards the camera and see what effect you like the most!.

Oh also the less busy the background the better, If you have a lot in the backgroud it can be too distracting, so keep it simple!

Hope it helps!?!?!?!?!?

Get someone to take the pictures for you but tell them exactly how to do it!. It depends on what you want from your pictures!. Maybe if you have pictures of cities in the background, or have a plain white background!. Take a few pictures, experiment with what you do!. Take a few looking into the camera, a few without!. Have fun ;)Www@QuestionHome@Com
