A LOT will depend on how realistic you want to make it!.

I mean, I COULD advise you to carve it out of a solid piece of granite, or cast in bronze, but I doubt you have the facilities to do it!.

Or, you could go the other way, and build a simple frame out of two by four lumber!. This wouldn't need more than four pieces for the legs, another for the back, and a couple more for the neck and head!. I few pieces for bracing and you could have a very basic "horse"

You can gradually build up bits of "realism" by adding details like a mane and tail, some eyes and ears and such!. You could bulk up the body parts by constucting a wire mesh (chicken wire) frame, added to the wooden subframe!. To this wire frame, you can add papier mache' skin, which you could shape and paint to suit your needs!. (be sure to widen the wooden "seat" along the horses back and sides so that your weight won't crush the wire and mache' skin!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I made one of these!. But I work in a very advanced sculpture shop!. Welded steel armature (steel pipe), then open cell foam glued on with expanding foam carved and coated with aquaresin!

But for low tech!. I think the well built wood frame with paper mache is your best bet!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Wood 2x4's, 1x4's screws drill bit, coutersink and a drill!. It will be abstract but strong!. You could even cover the wooden substructure with chicken wire and then cement/concrete to get more realistic shapeWww@QuestionHome@Com
