Photoshop and Painter and comparable in terms of painting, coloring, tools and option, but I think Ps is much more versatile and easier to use!.
Any version of Photoshop Elements will do, but preferably the latest version!. Elements is just a stripped down version of Photoshop!. It has only the essentials, but enough to get the job done!. I agree about getting a Wacom tablet, which is invaluable if you want to paint and color!. I got a 4x5 Graphire 3 about 3 years ago for $100!. Itcame with Photoshop Elements, Painter Classic AND a $30 rebate!. Great buy! I'm sure you can get similar bundles with the new Bamboo series, like this one:

It comes with Photoshop Elements 5!.0 and Painter essentials 3!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Corel applications are very good programs!. Photoshop and Illustrator are knee-jerk answers to "what's the best software for creating art!?" but Corel makes a good program as well!. I think it would be worth the money!. You'll find all sorts of cool things you can do with the program once you play around in it for a while!.

I highly suggest getting a Wacom tablet or similar product if you don't already have one!. I'm a graphic designer and I've used them before!. I almost feel like I can't work on the computer at all without a tablet!. I'm so much faster with one, especially in the designing programs!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have Painter X, it is a very cost effective program!.

I also have Photoshop, and some of it's features are much more useful, but it is VERY ridiculously overpriced!.

But PX has a special feature called "Real Bristle" it mimick, almost flawlessly, an actual brushes bristles!.

Bottom line, go for Painter X!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Don't waste your money!. if you want to eventually work for a shop/agency etc, they all primarily work in photoshop or illustrator!. Spend your money on one of those that way if you want to work in the design industry you will be familiar with the most commonly used program!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Painter is fun, but for layers and effects I think Photoshop is much easier!. Neither of them are worth the money, your best bet is to get PhotoShop Elements!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
