On the most basic level, Rubens provides a compelling illustrations of the familiar stories!.

" He was a practicing Catholic, not only devoted and pious but an informed Catholic, with a lively and accurate interest in tradition, ceremony, hagiography and mystic symbolism!. The Bible was well known to him, as were classical myths and the literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance!."

But he goes further than just tantalizing us with the exotic and dramatic elements of a story from long ago and far away!. He makes the story immediately relevant to viewers, both in the 17th century and today!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

You answered your own question!. Bible stories and characters were the basis for his religious themed paintings!. Had he used the Koran or other religious text, they would have influenced his paintings!.
He and other artists who painted religious scenes have to use their imaginations to create the images because there are no reference photos and virtually no drawings from the time!.
Descriptions in the Bible are many times translated and not accurately described, so you will see what the artist "thinks" objects, people, and the world at the time looks like!.
The "fantasy" art of today is the analog of biblical paintings of Ruben's day!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
