One thing could be that our self perception / identity is ever changing!. Throughout Rembrandt's life he created many self-portraits and they range in emotional intensity, style, darkness, etc and each represents a different stage and/or belief!. You could compare his earliest self-portraits where half of his face is hidden in shadow (this can connote insecurity and/or boyish curiosity) to his older self-portraits where his face is in more light but his eyes have lost their youthful glimmer!. There are many self-portraits to look at so just google them and pick 3-5 that best represent how you think his sense of self changed in each, documenting form earliest to latest!. You can relate this to your own life by trying to think of how you saw yourself at age ten versus how you see yourself now etc!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't have a fraction of the know-how that Debra B has, and she's given you a really great answer!. But I thought I'd point out another option!.
Rembrandt managed to succeed at painting several different subjects- portraits and self portraits, illustrations, landscapes, still life, etc!. We should learn that even if we've reached a status that is acceptable, we should still push to exceptional!. Only painting portraits would have been enough to get by with, but he didn't leave it at that!. And that's one thing that makes him great!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
