Believe it or not but if the ancient Greeks had a better understanding of optics and lens making, there is a chance that could have happened 2000 years ago!. The ideas of light sensitive chemistry was somewhat in place (no where like it is today by a long shot) but none the less, the concepts were there!.

The first permanent photograph was made in 1826 or 1827 by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce using a sliding wooden box camera made by Charles and Vincent Chevalier in Paris!. Niépce built on a discovery by Johann Heinrich Schultz (1724): a silver and chalk mixture darkens under exposure to light!. While this was the introduction of photography, the history of the camera can be traced back much further!. Photographic cameras were a development of the camera obscura, a device dating back to the Book of Optics (year 1021) of the Iraqi Arab scientist Ibn al-Haytham (Alhacen), which uses a pinhole or lens to project an image of the scene outside onto a viewing surface!.

Before the invention of the photographic processes we know of today, there was no way to preserve the images produced by these early cameras apart from manually tracing them!. The earliest cameras were room-sized, with space for one or more people inside; these gradually evolved into more and more compact models such that by Niépce's time portable handheld cameras suitable for photography were readily available!. The first camera that was small and portable enough to be practical for photography was built by Johann Zahn in 1685, though it would be almost 150 years before such an application was possible!.

Photography IS Greek, meaning - painting with light - and chemicals able to make a viable image with a focused lens were around 300 + years ago!.

The first "photographic image" is credited to a French guy from a 2nd floor studio and took something like 4 to 5 hours to expose, but there it was!.!.!.!

Cameras were everywhere in the mid 1800's and simple box cameras with paper negatives were the way it was done!. Glass negatives, tin types (from the Civil War era and cowboy days ruled as well!. Mathew Brady is !. was - a famous Civil War photographer and pioneered much in the field OF field photography!.

The honor of the "first camera" is shrouded in some of the pages of history, but one of the oldest "pictures" to be had is from this French mans studio in Paris almost 200 years ago!. I have this information in a book, but right now the book is buried in a closet behind a gazillion other books!.

Like a lot of things we take for granted, many are older than we realize and were just ahead of their time, at that time!.!.
