Question: Paint Question! What Paint do you use for a mural!.!?
Hello everyone,

My group at school is organising a mural for our school house, and we aren't sure which paint to use!. The mural will be inside, and painted on Plyboard (I think that's the right word - the stuff it is often painted on)!. It may or may not be behind some perspex - will this make a difference!?

If you can give a general idea of the price that would be great - but don't bother if it is too diffucult!.

P!.S!. I make it a policy to give a best answer on all my questions - provided anyone respones!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I assume you mean plywood covered with Plexiglas!?

And most murals aren't normally painted on plywood!. If plywood is used it's usually a backing behind a large canvas!. Most murals are usually either painted on canvas or on a pre-existing wall!. If you're using standard plywood make sure you prime the wood first before you paint over it!.

If they want it on plywood that means they want it mobil enough to move or take down when they want to!.

What kind of paint and the cost of the paint depends on several factors:

Like how large will the mural be!? Will it have a lot of details!?

Details require a better quality of paint and regular house paint won't do the job!. If it's a standard 4' x 8' sheet of plywood and you're adding a lot of details to it and have to use acrylic paints the cost could get expensive!.

My suggestion is to go with tempera as your paint!. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than either oils or acrylics and looks a lot like acrylics when dried!. But understand this: both acrylics and tempera dry fairly quickly!. It's best to plan out in advance (using sketches) before you start painting!. Or sketch out your design on the primed plywood before you start painting!.

And the only reason to cover your mural with Plexiglas is to protect it from some bozo who may want to deface it!. A 4' x 8' sheet of Plexiglas will cost you around $60 to $80, depending on it's thickness and what part of the country you live in!. Plexiglas comes in thicknesses from 1/8 to 5/8 inches!.

Have fun!.

(P!.S!. If your're buying the plywood yourself don't buy the thinner plywood sheets!. The 3/8 or 1/4 inch plywood will warp when it gets wet!. It's best to buy and use the 3/4 inch sheet!. And make sure you buy the better grade (one side pre-sanded) of plywood because it will have a smoothe surface!. Don't buy the construction grade pylwood!. A 3/4 inch finished grade of plywood, a 4' x 8' sheet, will cost you about $35!.00 at your local Home Depot!. The paint, if you're using tempera, will be the cheapest part of your project!. Pints of tempera are usually around $2!.00 a pint!. You're total cost for your project should be around $100!.00 to $120!.00, depending on how many different colors of tempera you use!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

depends on how big it is!. if its about the size of a wall use house paint, it leaves a better look, if it is smaller use standard acrylic paint!. both are good if you want to do detail!. if its just a few colours 2 or 3 use house paint as it comes in bigger pots and is designed for max coverage!.
if you put perspex over the painting the colours will change and the viewer will see their reflection in the painting - not a good idea!.
make sure you seal the ply before painting on it first - use a basic white house paint or primer!. this will allow the paint to stick and not go feral!.
price all depends on your size and materials!.
