Can you frame canvases with regular picture frames?

My father was a painter and I can tell you from personal knowledge that you cannot mount a canvas in a regular photo frame!.

Canvas frames are made with a small lip that goes around the backside of the frame front and the canvas frame is placed on this "ledge", and then is held in place with "L" shaped nails hammered into the picture frame and swiveled over the wood of the canvas frame to keep it in place!.
