Question: What is Art School Like!?
I'm a college student looking to enroll in an art school!. I kind of think art school would suit me better, but I'm really nervous about doing it!. I'm scared that it's a waste of my time and I don't have what it takes to really excel!.

So I'd like to hear from people who are in art school or who have already been: what is art school like in your experience!? Do all art schools judge you by your portfolio alone or your willingness to learn!?

I'm not trying to generate page views, I just want a serious opinion!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

You will do fine!. Everyone has potential in art, and art school is there to teach you how to do it well!. :) You have a good start!. Try to put together a portfolio of your best work, of various subjects and media if possible, because most art schools will ask to look at it!.

There will usually be a variety of classes for you to choose from so you can tailor your schedule to what you like best, but life drawing is always an important component and should be mandatory!.

Different schools are very different, though, so your answers to those questions will vary!. As someone who has been to both a good art school and a bad one, I can tell you it's very important to find one which will teach you well!. Look carefully at the prospectuses and look around the schools you are interested in, and talk to the tutors or current students if you can!. Choose one which has lectures as well as classroom work (this made a huge difference, since we were actually being taught how to draw - at the school where we just did drawing assignments in the classroom I didn't feel I was learning very much, and I have since discovered that this is because study of the right drawing techniques is needed as well as practice to become a good artist)!. If you are at a good one which challenges you and improves your skills it is really enjoyable!.

Funnily enough, it was the art school with the toughest entry procedure that was the worst one - they judged solely my portfolio and were quite snobby about my work, and yet their teaching wasn't even very good! I got into the second one just on art grades without an interview because they liked the sound of my enthusiasm on the phone and it was great!. Not that this is always the case, but don't worry about being a top notch artist before you go there!. You just have to put in the effort to find the right place!.

Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm currently enrolled in two art schools at the moment and to be honest I absolutly love it!. If you really are unsure look into doing the home based program through Art Instrucion Schools!. Its great!. If that works out look into Art Institute of Pittsburgh!. These are the schools that I'm attending!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
