Kinda depends on the shadow!.

If it's a shadow on a wall or something behind your subject, you might want to play with the cloning tool!. With it you can take another piece of the picture and paint over something else!. For example, your shadows!. Zoom in to the offending area!. If the shadow is on a wall, pick the cloning tool, hold down Alt and click on an area of the wall nearby that doesn't have the shadow on it, then click on the shadow!. Voila!.!.!.the "clean" wall is transferred onto the shadow!. You might want to Select the entire shadow so that it's all you hit!.

If you're talking about a shadow on a face or something like that, it's more difficult!. But you might want to try the dodge tool!. (Burn makes things darker, dodge brightens them!.) It looks like a magnifying glass or a lollipop!. In the toolbar at the top, pick Midtones or Shadows and change your brush size to large enough so that you can just make one pass over the area!. You'll have to play with the exposure setting, but start around 25%!.

I hope this helps!.

BTW, Scott Kelby's got a great book about Elements!. It's way over-priced, but it is a good resource!.
