Question: Can a 52mm filter fit on a 50mm lens!?
I'm leaning about camera lenses right now and Camray offers lots of filters for lenses but their sizes are like 49mm, 52mm, 55mm,58 etc!. Could a 49mm or 52mm filter fit over a 50mm lens!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

The 52mm filter designates the diameter of the lens while the 50mm lens is designating the focal length!. The 2 numbers are measurements that are not really related!.Check the diameter of the lens opening that is threaded and this will tell you which filter size you need to acquire,Www@QuestionHome@Com

when you say 50mm lens, that's the prime focal length not the filter size!. The filter size for most 50mm lenses, is 52mm's ( Nikon and Canon )!. So, if you got a 49mm filter, it would be to small!. However, a 52mm would fit, because that's the filter thread size!. Understand!? When it says for say ' Nikkor 50mm f/1!.8 lens ' the 50mm is the title is the focal length of the lens!.

So, when you look on the lens, or the technical specs on the internet, it will say something like ' filter size: 52mm's ' They aren't related at all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The only thing I can add to what G!.T!. Hildebrand said is you can also find it listed in the camera specs as "filter size"

52 mm was a common filter size for 50 mm prime lenses but it was not universal so look before you buy Www@QuestionHome@Com

Filter size is marked on the lens as a circle with a line through it and a number!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
