It's always a good idea to sketch your idea out on paper first - this way you can correct mistakes in your composition before you begin painting!. It saves time and makes a better finished painting!.

After you've had some experience and composition comes more naturally, you can try sketching directly on your canvas with thinned paint to start the painting!. Lots of artists do an "underpainting" - blocking in areas of shape and colour!. This gives you a good concept of the overall image and it a good time to make corrections before you go further into detail!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on what I am planning to paint!. If it is more abstract, I let my hand do what it wants to do!. If it is something like a portrait or something very detailed I like to sketch it lightly on whatever I plan to paint on, first!. That's what I do, but I am just a beginner, and I know other people with different opinions!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I've done some acrylic and now paint only with oils but my method is still the same!. One of the things i do that save me alot of time is sketch it out on paper and plan out my painting using notes!. I then transfer it to my canvas!. My art can be checked out at hellosanantonio!.com under artist name GUERRO1!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

With acrylic i usually sketch first since the paint dries quickly!. When i use oil i usually just freestyle it since you can move the paint over time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I usually lightly sketch just the outline first just to get an idea on proportionsWww@QuestionHome@Com
