Question: What is a good varnish or other solution for a table top painted with acrylics that is chipping easily!?
i painted my coffee table the other day with acrylic paints!. i sanded the table first, because its an already finished table (just a cheap one from ikea), but i'm thinking it wasn't sanded good enough!. i finished painting and then varnished it a few times over with blick acrylic gloss medium, but it still seems to be pulling away when i use my nail!. and i know it will surely chip or remove if something gets semi stuck to it (its a table after all and will have food and drink on it)!. is there a better varnish that will keep the table protected better!? or is there somewhere i can maybe buy a glass table top to put over it (chicago)!? anything would help!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You would have probably been better off with polyurethane sealant rather than acrylic medium!. Acrylic medium is not for that purpose!.
I would try Minwax Polyurethane sealant in gloss!.
BUT you have to look to see if it dries completely clear or will give a yellow cast to the painting!. You want the clear!.
also, I have a feeling that you did not get the sanded material off well enough!. Did you use tack cloth to remove all the particulate after you sanded!? Then you would have had to use mineral spirits or another solvent to get the rest off and prepare the surface for the acrylic!. That is probably why it is pulling off!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
