Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The best focal length for portraits is between 85mm and 135mm!. With Canon the crop ratio is 1!.6!. So the 50mm lens would actually give you a 80mm focal length and the 100mm would give you 160mm focal length!. The 50mm is closer to the focal length that you want!. also the canon 50mm 1!.8 is a nice inexpensive lens which produces nice bokeh!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

As has been stated, generally, 85mm-135mm is considered by many photographers to be an ideal focal length for portraiture!. Now, with a 1!.6 crop camera like the 400D, you are effectively dealing with focal lengths of 80mm and 160mm!. Both are very good for portraits, and it's a matter of personal taste as to which is the better portrait lens!.

Personally, I would lean towards the 100mm!. Longer lenses tend to throw backgrounds out of focus better and I like the compressed look telephoto lenses give pictures!. More compression tends to be more flattering to facial features!. By "compression" I mean the way in which foreground subjects relate to background objects in a photograph!. shorter focal lengths exaggerate distance between foreground and background, longer focal lengths compress this distance!.

You also have to consider what types of situations you'll be working in!. Do you expect to be in close quarters situations in which an effective 160mm focal length is going to be much too tight!?

A fact you would know is your camera has a 1!.6X crop factor!. That means either lens will work for portraiture!. The 50mm would be a common portrait lens in minimum length, the 100mm falls into the longest range!. You need to figure out which lens suits your style of shooting!. Canon's 85mm too, that would be a long portrait lens!.
You need the 50mm to work close with a subject or to get a group without backing away too far!. The longer lenses will let you back off a subject or for when you can't get in close!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Same as the other two answers!. 50 mm Canon f 1!.8 or if you can afford, the f 1!.4!. You'll get nice fuzzy background at wide open!.

I could cut and paste their answers, but I'd show you my photos instead!.

These were taken with Canon 5D (except one)!. So your coverage will not be as wide as these photos!. The perfect lens for portrait is the Canon 135 mm f 2, but it will be way to long on your camera!. Here is one example:

an 85mm lens will be the best!. 50mm is too short, marginal at best!. The 100 mm would work fine also, but you would have to be further away from your subject!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
