It's because the sculptors made the statuettes with their legs closed and they tended to make them with thicker thighs!. So thicker thighs that are "closed" is going to hide their genitalia!. Now if their legs were spread, I'm sure you'd see their genitals!.

*I bet if they were "skinny" statuettes you'd see the cameltoe, but as you probably saw on your visit, these women were carved to show them carrying more weight (same as their paintings)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Any stone sculpture has weak points where they are the most prone to breakage, the arms, and penis being the most vulnerable!. Look at Venus de Milo!. In medieval times many sculptures with genitalia where vandalized, by having the genitalia whacked off in the name decency which was the custom of the day!.
!.
In Pere La chaise cemetery in Paris the resting place for many famous people is included the art deco tomb of Oscar Wilde!. The original flying figure on the front of the tomb had a pronounced stone penis!. The story or legend says two older women, shocked by the display thought it to be indecent and broke it off!. When found by the cemetery staff the penis was used as a paper weight in the cemetary office for years!. The monument was never repaired!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
