Question: Which watercolor colors would be a good investment!?
I already have about 10 tubes, but they're pretty weird colors!. For example, the only red hue I have is cadmium red, and that makes a pretty lousy purple (does it have yellow in it!?)!. I was wondering if any experienced watercolorists had some favorite colors- ones that are easy to mix and make good grays!. Thanks!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Most watercolor painters develop a personal palette of colors they prefer to work with!. Above is right about alizarin crimson!. Learning how the different colors mix with each other is part of the process of becoming a good painter!. My preference has always been transparent colors and I learned that by trial and error!. Ultramarine blue + Alizarin crimson + Hansa yellow makes a great gray!. I have only one green, sap green, and mix my other greens!. I use Hansa yellow, med, Quin!. gold, and yellow ocher for yellows!. French ultramarine, cobalt and Windsor are my only blues!. I have a few transparent earth colors as well, but use them sparingly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

To make grey colors you mix those colors that are opposites on the color wheel!. Example: Blue/ orange, yellow/purple, or red/green!. To make a more brilliant purple use Alizarin crimson instead of cad red!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
