Either!. Or even both at the same time!. There are advantages to each!.

Many illustrators are employed full-time by companies in a variety of fields (advertising, games and animation, book illustration, architecture, you name it)!. Many illustrators are freelance, meaning that they take projects from companies which hire illustrators as they need them or sell their work to buyers!. Some work part-time in a fixed position and also take freelance work as well!.

A full-time position obviously has the advantage of a guaranteed wage at the end of the month, job security, and so on, but doing the same job every day can be a disadvantage if it's not something you're passionate about!. Freelancing brings with it the advantage of working as and when you like, working from home without the distraction of an office environment, and getting to work on an interesting variety of different projects, but you have to be your own manager and spend time promoting yourself!. There may also be periods where you cannot find work or where you have to accept something which does not interest you in order to pay the bills!. The half-and-half method is a compromise many designers and illustrators use in an attempt to have the best of both worlds!. The best method very much depends on the individual!.

I hope this was helpful to you!. :)Www@QuestionHome@Com
