CPU lens have CPU chips in them, all AF Nikkors and the new PC lens have them!. The CPU will tell the camera what aperture it's set at, focusing distance, what lens is attached!. A non CPU lens don't, these are manual focus lens!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's almost impossible to buy a new NON-CPU lens today!. This is not something that you would have to worry about unless you get into buying used lenses!. The CPU lenses have a row of little metal bumps to make contact with the camera body to do the things that Brian explained!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
