Question: How to carve a stone

I found a beautiful blood red stone on the shore of the snake river in Jackson Hole and wanted to save it as a memory of the fun times I had rafting!. I would like to carve some words on it but I don't know the tools I need to use and I don't want to break the stone so!.!.!.!.
