There are three primary steps!.

1) a good education in photography
2) a few years experience working as an assistant to a pro or as a staffer for a newspaper, magazine or PR department of a large company
3) a good understanding of running a business!.

On the business side, you will need a business and marketing plan, an understanding of what a profit and loss statement is as well as a good ledger program to keep track of your A/R's, A/P's and good liability insurance!. That is just a start!.

You will have to enough money for your startup costs (equipment, rental, utilities, etc) and too keep in business until you finally break even and start making a profit!.

I had four people come into my work yesterday, saying they needed a good camera for their photography business that they were starting!. Most, if not all of the four, did not understand that being a successful photographer means two things!. One, the photographer needs to know the the true artistic nature of photography!. And two, the photographer should be a good businessman!. If you only have one, or neither, expect your business to flounder!. If you have both, you may or may not succeed!.
