Make sure that the background isn't cluttered or too busy!. The eyes in any portrait are key!. If you are going to smile make it a real one, your eyes have to be smiling too!. Read your camera manual! So obvious but so many people don't bother!. It will have a lot of tips about improving your photos!.

Take a picture and then look at what you don't like about it!. Go and retake it!. Repeat until you're happy with it and you'll have learned a lot without really noticing!.

As others have said, practice, practice, practice!. I've taken over ten thousand photos this year!. I'm really happy with about 20! Take photos of everything!. Carry your camera with you wherever you go!. Look for interesting shots as you're walking around!. Change the angle you take the picture from (lie on the floor, climb a tree etc)!. Look for unusual angles and objects!.

You might want to ask some more specific questions than "how do I take a good photo!?" for instance, "how do I take a good portrait outside!?" or "how do I take a good landscape!?" then people will be able to give more specific help for the particular subject!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Look through other peoples pictures and pick out the ones you might like and study how you can take the same picture!.
Some of websites explains how they took those fantestic looking pictures!.
Study the lighting and composition!.
And you need to know your camera very well!.
And take tousands of pictures, practice, practice!.

1!. make sure you have clearly identifiable subject
2!. find some way to draw attention to the subj such:
natural framing device
converging lines
placement of the subj in the frame(rule of thirds-meant to be broken!)
selective focus
freezing action
3!. Learn to develop your eye by actually seeing what you are looking at!.
