Question: Canon put 21 Megapxiels on a 35mm sensor!. What is the theoretical limit!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
There really is no theoretical limit because long before the maximum theoretical pixel density is reached, other factors will become a problem!.

Already we are seeing issues with tiny sensors (like those on P&S cameras) with densities that are do high!. What happens is increased noise, especially when using higher ISO settings!. Diffraction can become the most restrictive of all physical attributes of increasing pixel counts on sensors!.

There are some links you may find interesting and help you understand pixel counts, pixel density and how sophisticated algorithms!.

Look here … there is a discussion about the size of pixels vs!. number of pixels!.

Nikon's new “FX” format sensor contains less pixels than the Canon 1Ds Mark III!. It may be the increased noise from higher pixel counts is why Nikon D3's are becoming popular at many sports venues!.

"At just 12!.1 megapixels, this new sensor has a large 8!.45μm [micrometer] pixel pitch, which combined with Nikon’s new micro-lens technology, enables the D3 to attain a default ISO range of 200 to 6400 and a maximum setting of ISO 25,600!. Supporting this new sensor is Nikon’s new EXPEED concept image-processing engine, a system that now appears as standard in all new Nikon cameras!.
The EXPEED processor has relatively low power consumption and provides the D3 with 14-bit A/D image
conversion, 16-bit image processing, improved noise reduction and faster file handling!." -- "Rangefinder Magazine"Www@QuestionHome@Com

it has thirty nine megapixels, and it thirty five thousand dollars, this is perhaps the best camera money can buy!. It's a very expensive camera, which you really wouldn't want to drop!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
