The market really depends are where you are located, if you want a design job with an agency or an in-house position!. However, Indiana isn't really considered a leader when it comes to the graphic design industry, but there are jobs here, if you can find them!.

The best really, I've found (I'm from the Indianapolis area and currently work in media in Muncie), and in general, is to do freelance work for a lot of different kinds of business/groups first, especially that you are still in school!. It's especially nice that you have photography experience, being a lot of freelance work requires that type of skill!. Freelance work can be paid or pro bono jobs and projects that you do as an outsider for the organization!. They can be a lot of fun, and provide great pieces for your portfolio!.

Since you can't work full-time, I would start building your portfolio--that's really what gets you into an interview for a position!. This should be a collection of all of your best work, to really show off your skills!. AIGA has great resources for portfolios and working in the business: http://www!.aiga!.org/content!.cfm/portfoli!.!.!. !.

Anymore, it's really best to have both a traditional portfolio (a print version) as well as some kind of online presence!. This doesn't mean you have to buy a website, but having some if not a large number of your work online is almost a must!. This gives a company or individual a chance to see your work from their office before they make the call, as well as your web building experience, if any!. When considering freelance or even work with a smaller company, its often best or required to have both print/identity experience as well as web design in some capacity!. There are a ton of places online where you can purchase a portfolio template or even http://www!.blogspot!.com works if that's all you can afford!.

also, definitely talk to the faculty at your school, especially the ones that have done your job in the past, and get advice about how to get into the industry!. They can give you great insight on what is ahead of you!.

But what you really have to remember is that with any art or visual position, there's no right or wrong way on how to get there!. But what is important is getting your body of work together and networking--which could just be name dropping or doing small jobs for a organization with a big name!.

And don't get discouraged! Design is a crazy business, but it's a exciting and worth the time and struggle!. Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Saucey,

You can go to the library and check out the job listings they have on file!. The librarian will know what you're talking about and show you how to go through them!. Some are federal and some are state jobs!. Try talking with the Unemployment Office in your area, too!. If you have a photography shop in your city give them a hollar!.

Good luck!
