Question: Are long exposures bad for my camera!?
I'm a n00b photophile!. I got an EOS xsi for my birthday and have been having a blast with it thus far!. I got a wide angle lens and did a bunch of long exposure night shots of San Francisco!. Do long exposures have any negative effects on my camera or the sensor!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!.!.!.!

The only thing 'bad' is running your batteries down quicker!. Other than that there is no ill affect!. Oh, your sensor may get warm, but you will most likely never feel it!. Some pictures MAY show extra noise because of this, with colored "snow" sprinkled around the image!. Keep the ISO down to 400 or 800 but don't be afraid to try higher or lower settings to find out where the best clean settings are for the lowest noise on YOUR camera!.!.

Take pictures and enjoy!.!.!.

Maybe with a cheapo cheapo model, but Canon is not just a reputable brand but one of the best brands!. While long exposures will wear down batteries fast, the shutter will be fine!. So will the sensor (sensors cope OK with camera flash, which is much brighter and more sudden than a comparatively gentle night shot!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is really no exposure too long !.!.!. if the lighting calls for a long exposure !.!.!. for instance when shooting star trails at night for four or five hours!. On the other hand, leaving the shutter open in bright sun for a long time is not recommended, especially focused at infinity and aimed with the sun in the frame (like a magnifying glass focused on a leaf !.!.!. remember those days!?)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Not at all!. You may even get some beautiful photos of SF skyline-something like the first three!.
