None of the other answers were completely correct!.

The, so called, "peace symbol" was not a simply upside down "Y!." If the vertical line of they "Y" went all the way through the "arms," from one side of the circle to the other, then it would be the "nuclear disarmament" sign, which WAS a combination of the flag semaphore positions of the letters, "N," and "D!." This was, later, adopted as the "peace sign!."

Without that additional line segment, and, merely, an upside down "Y" in a circle, then it is the "Mercedes Benz" logo!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's the peace sign sure enough, but it isn't a dove print - it is a combination of the flag signals (where a person holding two flags holds them in different clock positions for letters of the alphabet) for anti-nuclear demonstrations that was adopted for anti-war demonstrations!.
