to shade you have to know where your light source is!. this will tell you where your highlights and shadows are!. to practice shading i suggest you shade simple objects like cubes, spheres, etc!. this will help you get the concept of shading!.

when shading i go from dark to light!. first i make the object one solid shade, the medium shade it will be when final!. its not as dark as the shadow and not as light as the highlight!. i then use light pencil strokes to "gently" darken the shadowed area!. when im done with that i blend it with my finger, a tissue or a blending stump, to give it a smooth, finished look!. next i use an eraser, preferably a kneaded rubber eraser, to add the highlights!. if you dont have a kneaded rubber eraser a normal eraser will work just blend it gently with your finger or tissue!. finally i add any texture to give it a realistic look!. texture is usually short pencil strokes, small shadows and highlights, and "spotty" or varied shades!. different tones create a more realistic look!.

when shading flesh and rounded objects there will be a smooth, gradual, gradient from dark to light!. when shading something like a hard-edge cube there is virtually no gradient, just dark and light!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

thing you have to really focus on and look into would be your light source if you dont decide the light source from the begining of your drawing the shading will be from multiple angles thus making it look un real!.!.!.

clothes for example the folds they have in it try to picture in your head if a light shine at a certain direction which side will have a shadow and which dont!. From there you shade the places with shadow dark and the ones that dont lighter / un shadedWww@QuestionHome@Com
