i don't know if he is the "best", but the most expensive painting sold by a living artist is "Benefit Supervisor Sleeping" by Lucian Freud, sold this year at an auction for some 34 mln $Www@QuestionHome@Com

Why do you assume that selling a more expensive painting means he's a better painter!? I've seen quite a lot of overpriced modern crap out there, and people with real talent selling for pennies!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
