Question: Does anyone know the names/story of the 2 pondering angels from the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo!?

I think the work you are referring to is Raphael's Sisitine Madonna 1513-14, oil on canvas, 270 x 201 cm
Gem?ldegalerie, Dresden!.

The painting was probably intended to decorate the tomb of Julius II, for the holy pope Sixtus was the patron saint of the Della Rovere family and St Barbara and the two winged 'genii' (visible at the bottom of the picture space) could possibly symbolize the funeral ceremony!. Alternatively the two cherubs (who incidentally if the painting was actually above the tomb of Julius would appear as if leaning on the casket) given their innocence and apparent friendliness could be intercessors between the pope and the holy family!. Given the belief that angels had appeared to humans from time to time (I'm thinking here of a famous reported sighting at Castel Sant Angelo in Rome during this period) I would tend to go for the latter interpretation!.

Hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
