Question: Can i use cooking oil as a substitute of linseed oil!?
i want to prime my new artist pallete!. can i use cooking oil like olive oil as a substitue!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. Cooking oil will never dry!. Oil painting requires the use of a drying oil, like linseed!. Drying oils will harden over time through oxidation!.

So the only substitute for linseed oil, is another drying oil!. Walnut oil and poppyseed oil qualify!. Olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, corn oil etc!. definitely do not!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, I wouldn't use it to thin paint, but the only reason you are putting it on the palette is to seal the grain of the wood so the paint won't permeate it and stain it!. SO!.!.!.I don't see any reason why you couldn't use it to just seal the grain of the wood!. Heck my family has used olive oil (a gift of the Gods) for generations for everything!.!.!.and we're Scot-Irish!. Oil is oil basically!. The only reason I wouldn't use olive oil or corn oil to thin paint is that the masters used every kind of oil there is to add to paint for glazing, or smoothness!. I've never heard of any of them FAVORING olive oil, or safflower -sunflower oil -(which they OBVIOUSLY had access to) or corn oil (New World oil) for actually adding to their pigments!. The favorites were linseed, sun thickened linseed, walnut oil and some sort of amber mixed with oil!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no, it will go rancid!. You can use safflower oil!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

these people are right, and if nothing else, don't do it because it will discolor your paint!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
