Question: New 50mm f1!.8 lens not fully working on my Nikon D70!?
I just purchased a new lens, it was a 50mm f1!.8 nikon lens (description in link below)
http://www!.amazon!.com/Nikon-50mm-Nikkor-!.!.!.

I bought it for my Nikon DSLR D70, but after I attached the lens the camera's metering system didn't work (instead of showing the f-number in the camera display, it displays f - -) , and the autofocus didn't work (it would still manual focus and take pictures though)
However, I am more concerned about the metering not working than the autofocus!.

I tried clicking the 'aperture lock lever' into place, but the camera still isn't metering!.
I've never bought a prime lens before (I've just had a kit lens for the nikon)

Does anyone know why the metering wouldn't be working!? Is this the wrong type of lens for my camera!? Do I need to buy a special accessory!?

Thank-you in advanceWww@QuestionHome@Com

This should be fine!. The f-- error says that it is not a CPU lens, which it is, so it must either be not attached all the way or defective!.

I'm sorry if this is too basic for you, but be sure that the lens is rotated all the way so that the index line (between the word Nikkor and the number 50mm) is at top dead center!. If you can rotate the lens at all (ie: more that a fraction of a millimeter) then it is not locked in place!. The lens should not move at all unless you have depressed the lens lock button!.

If the lens is in place, you should not get the f-- error, even if you have not locked the aperture at f/22!.

also, the autofocus should work, even if you have not locked the aperture at f/22!.

Make sure that you didn't bump the AF/M switch on the side of the lens mount while you were attaching the lens!. It needs to be on "AF" for autofocus!.

If your lens is all the way on, as described, you should return the lens for a replacement if it is a new purchase!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

With AF lenses on a D70, you loose 3D color matrix metering, but it will still meter using standard matrix metering!. In order to get rid of the f -- error you're getting, ensure the aperture ring is locked and set to f/22!. It will not work if set to any other aperture setting!. This is standard with all AF-D lenses used on auto-aperture/auto exposure cameras!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
