You'll get all the people of the Canon and Nikon persuasion coming out of the woodwork with questions like this!.

Personally I'm of the Pentax persuasion, much more camera for your money Anti Shake built into the camera so every lens is Anti Shake, more lenses available than most other manufacturers, good build quality!. All the functions, some you never thought of available to you!. Designed by photographers for photographers!.

Actually camera make does not matter one jot, lens quality does!.

Don't forget you're buying into a system the camera is just the 'down payment', you'll spend a lot more on lenses and flashguns etc!. in the coming years, with Pentax you can use any lens, with some limitations from the older ones!. For instance if its a manually focusing lens it still will be on your DSLR, if the lens was designed to be used with 'stop down metering' 40 years ago it still will be, but the lens quality will be superb and you can get them for a song!.

Get the DSLR that sits right in your hand, where all the controls are where you expect them to be, in other words 'just feels right' to you!. Look at build quality, is the viewfinder large and bright!?

Be aware that some of the lower end Nikons don't have all the functions, the D40 can't do automatic bracketed shots (required for HDR and other situations) for instance!.

Well that's my two pennorth, others will be along soon!.

You don't say what areas of photography you will be tackling, or at what level!. Without this information, model recommendations are hard to make!.
As to brand, the 'best' camera is the one that handles best for you!. The following makes are all of a very good standard:
Nikon
Canon
Sony
Pentax
Olympus
No matter what other posters may try to persuade you, neither Nikon nor Canon have any special, magical qualities that make them supreme!. What they do have is a lot of professional users, mainly on account of their very wide range of lenses and accessories!. If you're operating at an amateur level, the other brands' lenses are just as good, and will produce images of a comparable quality to the Big Two!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That all depends upon what you want to photograph!. Think about the types of shots you want to take, and what lenses you'll need for such photos!.

Then go to http://dpreivew!.com and compare the diff rent DSLR cameras side by side, and read the reviews!. After you've narrowed down your choices, go to a real camera store!. (not Best Buy or Wal Mart)!. Handle the different cameras, try them with different lenses, and chose the one which fits you best!.

Some of the cameras have in camera image stability, and others have in lens image stability!. I do believe that the in lens stability works considerably better than the in camera versions!. You also need to think about the availability of lenses and other accessories you will need in the future, as you grow with your camera!. Currently Canon and Nikon have the most available options!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You should get the new Hassleblad H3D II 50!. It's brand new, it comes out in October of this year!.

Here's a link:
http://www!.dpreview!.com/news/0807/080709!.!.!.

It only costs $40,000!. That's a steal for a 50 megapixel medium format SLR and digital back!. That, I would consider, is the best camera money can buy!. Maybe not my money, but certainly someone who can afford it!. I assume you can because you used the word "best"!. That is fairly broad, but is not hard to answer!. If this answer is a little too over the top for you, perhaps you should add details like what sort of things you will do with the camera, your price range, and experience!. That way, people can provide you with a better answer!.

If this answer has satisfied you curiosity, I'm glad to have helped and have a super awesome day!Www@QuestionHome@Com
