Question: Strobes, continuous, placement, color, etc; Is the question of "lighting" under explored by photographers!?

Mere, good question! I know I've played around with the lighting with how it drops shadows lately, but I've always had somewhat of a fascination with that!. I guess lighting is sometimes taken for granted in that it can be just as much of an element in composition as any object, depth in field, etc!.

I think at times one of my biggest problems is the fact that I tend to sometimes focus in on one tiny little detail instead of paying attention to the overall dynamic!. Reflections ALWAYS do me in - guess i'm like a parrot or something!. Sort of how I am in normal life, too - I call it the "shiny object in field of view" effect!.

I just had to pretty much redo a pretty big crash course in the basics of lighting - it's been 10+ years since i've taken the class because my buddy wanted to have a general idea how to use a camera before he goes overseas to teach English!.!.!. It was strange in reviewing my old book!. Much of what was in the book was remembered, but just sort of buried deep!.

Edit: I'm somewhat having to stick away from strobes lately - I don't quite have the cash for the good big ones - can only afford the little on-camera jobs!. and really, if I ended up getting strobes, I'd be tempted to go all out!. Key, fill, rim, halo, and perhaps a background one for good measure!. I do not quite have the cash for that!. Not that I'd really probably use all of them, but it'd be nice to know I have all of that in my bag of tricks!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The term photographer can be applied so broadly that if it's not contextualized, your question almost doesn't have a point of focus!.

If you really think about it, everything you mention (including the grab bag of 'etc') has been intensely explored by photographers and passed along to other photographers!. No other visual art is as concerned with, or as intimately connect to light as photography!. Not even painting!. The answer is then 'No!.' Somewhere, at this moment, some photographer somewhere is exploring new possibilities of lighting!.

If you mean to ask if a particular photographer in a particular field of photography is 'under' exploring lighting, probably, maybe even likely!. On the whole, taking photographers as a group, I don't think lighting is 'under explored!.'

Of course, it all depends on your definition of what a photographer is!.

I think you'd have to define "photographer" to answer that question!. A serious photographer dedicated to his/her art will continue to explore light in every aspect of their work!. A person who just takes snapshots will take lighting for granted and then wonder "why don't my pics look professional!?"Www@QuestionHome@Com
