Question: Does anyone know anything about art!?!?
I have an old oil painting that I got a few years ago at a church sale!. The previous owner said he received it from his wife for Father's day about 25 years ago (at the time) and it wasn't new when he got it!. I found this same painting on Ebay a while back and asked the seller some questions!. She didn't know anything about the artist, either!. She purchased the painting at an estate sale and all she knew was that the auctioneer said that this artists paintings have sold at previous auctions for $600-$1200!. The painting I have is an original oil painting on canvas of some clipper ships at sea!. It is signed by "Jackson" I have tried researching the name and have come up with nothing!. I do not know if this is his first or last name or where he orginated from!. I am posting some links to the pictures of the painting!.!.!.if anyone recognizes it or has any idea of what I should do to learn more about it, it would be so helpful!. I know nothing about art!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

ok, this is coming from an art historian!.

i second mary p's thoughts!.!.!. the other post is too pessimistic for me!. (there was a woman that bought a Jackson Polick at a garage sale for 1$ and it ended up being worth thousands)

if you REALLY want to know, find a local auction house that deals with antiques and/or art!. contact them, they will either give you the info you need or tell you who can!. you just need to be polite and patient!. if they do not help you, get in contact with your local major art museum, the curators are usually willing to help!. before you call anyone, make a VERY thorough observation of the work!. look at it under bright lights with magnification (front, back and sides)!. you would be surprised what you can find!. note if the painting looks like it was painted on the canvas or attached afterwards, if the canvas was cut down after painting, stamps, markings, numbers, ect!. then make sure you tell whom ever you contact about your findings!.

good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is hard to say who the artist is,but you should get a real art apraiser( sorry most likely misspelled) to look at it, most of the gallerys in your aria will be able to send you in the right direction! If not contact me at www!.abrushwithlife@hotmail!.com and I will try to help you with your serch!. I hope you find what you are looking for! SevastraWww@QuestionHome@Com

The picture of the painting is very small an hard to be sure, but;

It looks like a 50's or 60's production studio painting!. The fact that there is 'one just like it' also points in that direction!. It probably is made by a whole set of people!. Sometimes on the back you will find the studio stamp!.

It looks like a nice painting and has no real artistic value!. Meaning it is not regarded as art!. As a piece of decorative painting is one of the better ones!.

Ships, landscapes and subjects like that have a good market and I would expect a painting like that to do about the same at auction if you were to sell it today in an art auction!. Yes it would be sold in a art auction anyway :-) The price would be close to the low end though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I know a bit about maritime art!. 2 artists who come to mind with the last name Jackson are Andrew Jackson and William Jackson and neither of these men are your artist, their styles are different!. There was an Dutch/American artist named Jacebsen (spelling may be off) but he painted profiles of ships mainly!.

It is a beautiful painting, but I fear it may be the work of a student or another who paints as a hobby!.

What is it painted on!? Canvas!? Masonite!? How is the frame held together (not the ornate frame, but the frame the canvass would be stretched on)!. If it is yellowed it most likely has been varnished!. also you saw "the same painting" on Ebay!. Makes me wonder more about its' value!.

Do not be disappointed though, it is a lovely piece!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
