In our design course we learnt Flash (create cartoon animation on desktop), Illustrator (laying out magazine pages eg) and Photoshop ( colouring and adjusting photos or drawings)!.
The basics of design is based on photography design and also the mood you want to create!. Look at photography courses, they suggest to take a photo in the basic shapes!. There must be a focal point, use the rule of thirds!.

Online tutorials are the best or even buy a book that has tutorials in it!.
