Position:Home>Visual Arts> Will my oil painting ever dry?Question: Will my oil painting ever dry!? I did an oil painting 6 days ago using store-bought paint on a stretched canvas from Big Lots!. Obviously, I'm about as beginner as it gets!. I only did one layer of paint, but my painting is still wet!! It's been hanging around so long that my family keeps bumping into it and smudging it!. Could the cheap canvas be at fault, or did I leave out something crucial when I was painting!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Yes it takes time!. And it's best at some point to "seal" your painting with varnish!. Damar is good, BUT!.!.!. it will state right on the bottle to let an oil painting dry for A YEAR before applying!. There are products to help the dry time out, BUT!.!.!. someone mentioned using thinner!? Which I myself did for awhile!. Until I read that over time thinner, (turp etc) will break down the paint!. Now think about that, thinner is what you use to clean a brush!. So yes, it would break down paint too!. It's what it was designed to do!. I stopped using it as an underpainting medium!. Alkyd based mediums will speed up dry time without putting that time bomb into your paint!. Other than that, put it in a safe place, and give it time!. (Darn oils!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com Depending on how thick the paint is, and whether or not you use paint mediums, it can take a long time for oils to dry!. there are things you can add to the paint that can increase it's drying time, or you can thin the paint down significantly with turpetine or turpenoid (both paint thinners), and this will decrease the drying time!. When I paint with oils, I often start with a very thin undercoat which I create by adding the paint thinner!. This usually dries within a day, though it is a very thin layer of paint!. If you want quick dry, I agree with everyone else about acrylics!. You can get the same vibrant colors as oils, and they dry much faster!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Nah, that is the way it is!. It will take awhile!. Best thing to do is go hang it somewhere where no body goes (in the attic) or in the garage attic and leave it be!. While it is still wet you can add those finishing touches to the painting!. I believe the paint store that sold you the oils would have the product for clearcoating the oil so that it is then "finished" and dried !. You can go that route!.Www@QuestionHome@Com If you used any of the cadmium colours or any whites (esp titanium), it will take some time to dry!. If you did not use any special drying mediums such as W & N Liquin, it would take at most 3 weeks to dry!. Please note that it will be "touch dry"!. The inner layers will take just about a year to fully dry!. It's best to hang the painting away from any possible bumps or disturbances such as your family bumping into it!. Oil paints are not entirely dry until about six months!. Put it up high where people cannot bump into it!. Wet paintings are always a problem!. I have a wall shelf just for holding oil paintings while they dry!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Ordinarily, it takes 6 weeks for an oil painting to dry, but under damp circumstances it could take as long as 2 years!.
