The statue was closed in 1984 to repair the statue and replace the torch, which had been leaking rainwater and snow melt since it was haphazardly repaired in 1916 by Gutzon Borglum (the sculptor who designed Mt!. Rushmore)!. The torch was damaged in that year in the explosion of a munition dump on Black Tom island, adjacent to Liberty Island, by German agents!.

The new torch was in place for the reopening of the statue on its centennial in 1986!. The original torch, in your first picture, is on display in the island's lobby!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Not the original!. The original is in a museum nearby the statue!. When the Statue of Liberty was refurbished, late last century, the original was thought to be too delicate to go back up, so a replacement was furnished!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
