Yes, you would definitely need to learn how to draw & sketch and put your ideas on to paper!. That is the beginning fundamental required classes: basic drawing, basic 2-D design, basic 3-D design!. But don't worry, they will teach you the basics and give you assignments and projects to practice your drawing skill!. Then you move up to learning how to draw flat patterns of your design and draping, as well as fashion illustration!. What I found to be helpful for me was learning figure and anatomical drawing after learning basic drawing!. So just get some basic drawing books and learn some basic concepts of drawing, such as values, shading, hues, and dimensions!. also learn and memorize the Color Wheel, so you can work with the basic color schemes!. Try to sign up for a basic Design Art class that not only teaches drawing, but also a bit of art history, textures, and color schemes!.

Aside from drawing and sewing fundamentals, another basic required course is learning the fundamentals of textiles, which is learning the different fabric materials!. Being able to see designs in your mind can differ greatly when you actually make the patterns, whether it's paper patterns or draping the fabric patterns, because certain fabric texture might not work with certain styles and designs you have in mind!. And certain fabrics might not work well with certain stitches!.

Although the drawing skill you can develop independently, it's the exposure to various fabric textures in textile class and the more advanced courses, such as hands-on sewing, tailoring, draping, presentation, and management, that give you the experience that cannot be learned on your own, especially getting the network to establish your name in the industry!.

But don't worry too much, they will guide you along at a good pace!. Best wishes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you are going to school for it they will teach you how!. The designer a lot of times doesn't even do the drawing!. They have a design illustrator that works with them!. It does help to know how!. I am self taught!. also if you can come up with a working prototype thats even better anyway! Just practice!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
