Question: Illegal To Take Pictures of License Plates!?
Is it illegal to take pictures of a car, with the license plate clearly showing!? And then post that picture on the internet!. Not for any "evil" purposes, but for fine art photography!. Thanks!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No it's not illegal unless you trespass to take the photo on someones property!. That does not mean that they will be happy about it but it's not illegal!.

The same with photo's of people!. It is not against the law to take someone's photo if they are in public!. If you climb their fence and take their photo or take their photo where their is a reasonable expectation of privacy (bathroom etc) you may have problems!.

also just because it is not illegal does not guarantee they won't try to sue you it just means they will probably loose!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's perfectly legal, but I'd be p*ssed off if someone did that with my license plate!. If you're not giving away any information about that person, how is it different from just seeing that plate out on the street in person anyway!?

It'd probably be best just to ask permission of the owner, to be sure they're ok with it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

IDK, it might be an invasion of privacy or something!. If you have a pic of _my_ license plate and I see it, I will definitely do something about that!.
Probably not illegal now that I think about it!. Those numbers are always out in public view!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Wouldn't this be handled the same as a photo of someone's building!? If you are taking the picture in a public place, I don't think there's a problem!.

Gee!. I'd better watch this question, as I have posted a few photos of plates on Flickr myself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with the others in that I would not like to have my license plate on the internet!. Is there any way that you could blur it out!? It would avoid any problems with posting the picture!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If it's in the interest of nabbing a crook, fine!. If not, I think it's imprudent and possibly dangerous!. You never know what kind of kook will see it and track it down!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

it would probably be best if you edited the photo and blurred out the license plateWww@QuestionHome@Com
