The original way was with translucent oil based colors often applied with a Q-tip!. They were gently rubbed over the areas you wanted to make - colored - and allowed to set up between sessions!. Try www!.calumetphoto!.com for the oils, and A good coloration job could take ALL day or many days depending on you, the paper, the detail, how long it took the last layer of oils to 'dry' and so forth!. If the B&W print is on glossy paper you may have a real bad time because glossy paper is NOT good for coloring!. Usually the papers were thick and very matt finish or even a textured matt finish but still NOT glossy!. Tweed, canvas and leather were the more common ones for oil coloring!. Smooth matt (again NOT glossy) was also used!. Glossy finishes don't seem to take a smooth coating of the oil colors well and streak more plus they have little for the oil to soak into!.
Another way is to scan the print and color it on the computer!. You would have to experiment with YOUR image editing program, which paint brushes, densities, spray paint technique and so forth, but I have seen beautiful results this way too, then printed out on photo like paper!.!.!. And I would recommend a copy, maybe many, of the work you want to do because if you ruin the original, your dead!.!.!.!.
