Question: Is this the most horrible thig you've ever heard or what!?
I was volunteering as a counselor at a 3 day camp with the elementary school, and we had like 8 and 9 year olds, and one day we took our campers out to the edge of a lake, gave them markers, and told them to draw what they saw!. This one kid, vincent was drawing the lake red, and a log purple and it looked pretty cool, all andy warhol-y, and his teacher comes up behind him, grabs the paper and says "You're supposed to draw what you SEE, Vincent!. I don't see and purple or red!. she gave him a new peice of paper and a blue and brown marker!.

I don't know this really bothered me!. Do you have any stories like this!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

This is exactly the kind of attitude that makes artistic kids turn away from painting!.

I was at an outdoor painting workshop once, trying to paint some rocks that were making me angry!.!.!. I started over and re-painted the scene using brilliant angry orange - and it looked great!. Another would-be painter looked at my work, looked at the gray rocks in front of me, then asked, confused - "Where did you get that orange colour!?"

I answered, "From the orange paint tube!."

I sold the painting with no trouble - it was my personal interpretation of what I saw!.

That teacher needs to open her mind a bit and stop stomping on artistic freedom!. What she sees is not necessarily what everyone else sees!. If everyone painted what we saw, we could all just use a camera!. And you can tell her I said so!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As much as there should be artistic freedom, also a part of creativity arises from contraint!. Now, the "rules of the game" here were the instructions by the teacher!. So if the teacher really instructed them to "draw" what they "see" then he is absolutely right in hisjudgement!.

But, of course other than this the teacher is an absolute brute and douchebag who really cant think out of the box and does not even know the A of Art or atleast it's history!. Maybe a dose of philosophy would really help!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

lol sounds like the kid might have been slightly color-blind!. purple=blue, red=brown!. Some people who are color blind see colors differently than others who are color blind!. Like, my brother is color-blind!. I was one wearing a bright red dress and he complimented me on my "pretty purple dress"!.

I do think the teacher was wrong though to make him use her colors!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That's so stupid, how old was the teacher anyways!? That's really mean to do that to an 8 or 9 year old!. You should pull a prank on that teacher!. Or you should prank call her!. Like, make it sound kinda freaky like a freak is coming to get her for doing that!. Jk Lol

Did you know, lol stands for little old lady!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Report that teacherWww@QuestionHome@Com

well, i think the teacher mightve been a little over dramatic!. The teacher said to draw what they saw!. what if this kid saw a red lake with a purple log!. let it be!. this kid might be colorblind or might just have a different view of the world than most other people!. this teacher doesnt see that!. she shouldve just let the child express himself no matter how weird he does it!. if this continues this child might grow up and be emo!. (i mean it) if nobody lets this child express himself, he probably will have a problem socializing in fear that people will not like what he says or does!. you should go to this teacher and tell her what she did was wrong and explain to her why!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Amen to that Henry!
I'm an artist and this young teacher should be pushed into the lake for not allowing youngsters to enjoy complete freedom of expression in showing the world how they "see" and perceive things around them!
I think the counsler should be given a strong reprimand from the camp's owner!.
Camp is meant to be fun!
I don't care how great of an artist that particular counselor is!.!.!.if they can't produce a photographically perfect rendition of the scenery in front of them I'd rip up whatever they attempted to draw to show them just how idiotic what they did to that poor kid truly was!.
Sorry, that kinda just pissed me off a bit!.
Douchbag!?!?!? Naaa!.!.!.I'd say more like FU%*ing a$$hole~!

Color blind did come to mind also, but just enjoying the art process and artistic freedom is probably more like it!.!.!.
God bless the USA and all the freedoms our brave men and women in the armed forces fight to protect!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

That teacher was DEAD WRONG to do that!. Just because the kid didn't see what she saw, doesn't make it wrong!. It is things like this that are the reason we have so many children on Ritalin and other mind altering drugs!. Because we can't let them be themselves!. If the kid saw purple rocks, and orange water, then let him draw that!. By stifling their creativity, we are stifling their ability to think outside the box!. That one incident could have killed the imagination of the person who could have come up with the alternate fuel source, or the cure for cancer!. Those kinds of thinkers won't come out of a teaching system that smashes creativity!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
