Go with the Nikon D-40 or more if your pockets are deeper!. Why Nikon!.!.!? I will explain !.!.
Nikon has a unique lens mount called the F mount!. It has been around since the mid to late 50's and is used still today!. ALL Nikon SLR cameras use this lens/body mount, film and digital!. The amount of older fine lenses and accessories as well as newer ones today using this mount are staggering!. And ya know what!.!.!? 95% will still fit and work, in one way or another, today on the new digital bodies!. You may not have auto focus or auto exposure, but the camera has MANUAL settings and your still good as gold!. On top of the long list of Nikon produced items you have a gazillion other manufactures who made things with the F mount too, so the amount of 'things' just grew even larger!. Flea markets!. Yard sales!. Heck, things can be found almost anywhere that may interest you!.!.!.
Another thing to think about is why spend good money twice in just a few years, meaning a mediocre camera now then a better one later!. The learning curve isn't that hard between a so called amateur camera and that of one the so called a 'pro' model, besides, many 'pros' carry anything that allows them to make $$ as long as the camera has the functions needed to keep up with their - minds!.
Anyway, back to what camera!.!.!. The best camera is one you will use and understand!. If not, it was a waste of time and money!. Another thing to think of is what kind of photography do you want to do!.!.!? If your answer is "everything" then a camera that can do "everything" will be needed, but hard to find!. However, a D-SLR, of any make, will come close because as in the film body days, it was nothing more than a light tight box that held the film and allowed all the extras to be mounted - on it!. Same with the digitals today!. They hold the sensor chip!. Allow exposure control (full auto or manual over ride)!. Have flash ability and a few other built in embellishments!. But!.!. It is the fact you can change out the lens to a wide number of 'things' that makes the camera body and your mind, powerful!.
Telescopes!. Microscopes!. Bellows for close-ups!. Fish eye wide angles and telephotos!. And Nikon has the largest "database" of accessories, new or used, than anyone!. And almost ALL will fit and allow use in some way or another on cameras today!. I'm still using 30 year old lenses!.
The Nikon D-200 or 300 would be a excellent choice, even for a beginner because of their versatility!. Fuji Pro cameras, built on Nikon bodies, would be another good example and their S-5 (a modified D-200) would be a excellent choice (and is my choice for I own one, as well as their S-3 and S-2 cameras!. I like their sensors and color better than Nikon)!.
Bottom line is try to understand what it is you wanna do, in photography, and buy a camera that can keep up with your mind!. Better to pay a lil more now than to pay twice down the road shortly!.

Well, until about two months ago I used the Fujifilm Finepix S5200!. That's a pretty good camera for amatuer photographers, and it's really a bang for your buck!. But for my birthday in May I got the Nikon D-40!. It's amazing!. I recommend it all the time!. I didn't buy it myself, but I'm fairly sure it cost about $500!. The Fuji was $300ish!. But if you're pretty serious about it I'd go with the Nikon or something similar!. If you're less serious, but still want to take some amazing photos, go for the Fuji!. I'm not sure that the S5200 is still in production, but I know they have a similar model for around the same price range!.

I have heard Nikon since they have a lot of interchangable lenses and I have noted when looking at pics, I consistently favor the Nikon ones!. The D70 is awesome, and they have others - so look into them!. I have a Canon and wish I would have just gone with the better Nikon right off the bat!. Enjoy your hobby, I am learning composition and camera settings and then I want to get a new computer and photoshop!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Everyone here is going to be biased to their own camera!. With that said!.!.!.get a Canon Rebel XTi!.

no really though, go to a camera store, tell the workers there what you want, and they'll help you out!. I've never met any camera store owner who wasn't willing to help!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
