Question: Do you think in 30 years, many digital photos will be lost due to being dead technology!?
Will anyone be able to read CDs or DVDs then!? Will JPG, TIFF and other current formats be as rare as reel to reel tape players!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Yes I do!.

Few people will transfer files from old tech to new or take the time to print their pictures and store them!. Their descendants will be left with nothing useful!.

My descendants, however, will inherit photo albums which should last at least another hundred years!. They'll also have my archived negatives!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Its very possible the technology will become obsolete, but if you make hard copies(prints)and like it went from 8 track to cassette, records to disks,VHR to DVD you will, more than likely have someone capitalizing on transfer media, from one technology to the other, after all,you can still find record players(though its a little harder these days),cassette players,VHR/VHS recorders, the only technology that completly was extinct are the eight track tapes and players!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The technology will certainly be there to transfer your optical disk files to the latest medium as well as there will be software that will convert your old file formats to the latest format!. To make an analogy, I just converted a bunch of my 80 year old wax jazz records to mp3 format!. It wasn't hard to do, but it did take some time, actually a lot of time and this will be the case if you shoot a lot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Absolutely there will be a gap in the photo history around the time that digital became mainstream!.

Face it dvds are not the answer, I archived a lot of my collection on disks from a reputable lab that are unreadable today and its only been 7 years!. I now back up strictly to hard drives and them unplug them!. (I have 35 drives of varying capacities 300gig to 1TB)

Hard drives on the other hand also change their standards example is the IDE to Sata!. But at a much slower rate than the other peripherals!. But how many years before you cant buy a motherboard with IDE tech!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

The newest technology now is the Blue-Ray DVD!. In a few years, I will be transferring all my backup CD's and DVD's to them!. As technology changes, there will be enough overlap between technologies to save our data !.!.!. we will only lose our data due to inattentionWww@QuestionHome@Com

It's pretty unlikely a file format will become unreadable due to obsolescence!. Why or when would Adobe remove those from their software!? I guess I need to pass my PS3 disks to my daughter!.
It is a good question, I think a lot will be lost due to carelessness in storage!.

And, wolfe they still make vinyl records!

In the future, If I'm too busy for time travel to retrieve files, I plan to have my computer do it just by thinking about it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no, because after you take pictures on a digital camera you can get them printed to come out like normal photos!. and then you can put those in a photo album!. so you won't be losing any picturesWww@QuestionHome@Com

Absolutely not!. Between now and then the digital pictures can be converted to the new format (whatever that may be), just as 4 track tape was converted to compact disks in the 1980's!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That's why i still only used Polaroid camera for my pictures !!Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is certainly a possibility!. I hope that never happens!. :(Www@QuestionHome@Com
