Much depends on the viewing distance and what the printer can work at!.Obviously you need the best possible quality as this size can prove expensive!.!.An image with lots of fine detail would let you get away with a lower setting,while simple geometric curves in plain areas would need more pixels!.Contact your printer if you are contracting the work out as some need different file forms for their equipment,and they will have experience of their particular machines!.If you have your own printer,even a small one try to print a small section of your poster as a test,I tried a 14 foot high from a 100Mb image at 4000 dpi on my scanner using an old Hasselblad negative,and printed an A4 section,the results were impressive for a first go but you must try your own tests to see if that will match your equipment!.Re sized and re sampled files can be very large and need a lot of time and processing power!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The very best way to achieve this is with film!.

Use 35mm film and scan the image in to Photoshop for digital output!. 35mm film will give you 5380 x 3620 pixel resolution whereas a 10MP camera will only give you 3872 x 2592!.

Unless you have a high end digital camera you will have a bad image even at 10MP!. Depends on the size of your sensor!. Pocket sized 10MP cameras have small sensors and are not suitable!.

Check the manufacturers recommendations as to print size!.

Although not poster size, i have had a pic blown up to 50x70 cm, with room to spare, so to say, and mine is only 6!. So I would say 10 mp is ample!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
