The "red ring" started off as a means of indicating that the lenses carrying it have some sort of non-standard lens element!. This means that the lens contains either an aspherical element, and element made of fluorite, or ultra low dispersion glass!.

Some spectacular lenses don't have a red ring because they don't need one of these special elements to be spectacular!. Take the 50mm 1!.8, for example!.

I use Canon FD mount cameras, and don't own any L lenses!. All of the L lenses available cost way too much, and there are much less expensive but equally as good alternatives!. Take my $225 400mm 4!.5, for example, which is just as good but about 10% of the cost of the 400mm 2!.8L!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!. Many people state its the photog and not the camera!. However if I were to do a job that required a "red ring" I would probably rent one if I couldnt afford it srtaight off!.

I have read alot of opinions that people have heard from other people that the Canon 24-70 f/2!.8L can be a bit soft, and that some third party lenses (Tamron) are actually sharper!. I dont have one of those lenses!. I have a 24-70 f/2!.8 lens that comes with a 4 year warranty (which the warranty wont do me any good when I am on location with a lens that just fell apart)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

HI there!. Many, many people buy Canon DLSR lenses that don't have the red ring around them!.!.!. in fact, most people cannot afford them!. The red ring indicates an "L" lens - the best and most expensive of the Canon lenses!. The top of the line white lenses with the red ring are the professional type and some cost as much as $8000!.00!. The black L lenses with the red ring are not as expensive as the white!.!.!. but they do make you think when plucking your $$$ down to spend on them!. If you were a professional photographer using Canon, you would not have asked that question!.!.!. and if you aren't in the professional league!.!.!. just buy and enjoy the lenses that are in your price range!. Hope I was able to help!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If I had a Canon DSLR it would have been a gift so I guess I would spring for the reds!. Although I do believe it is the red stripe and not the photographer http://cgi!.ebay!.com/Detail-Master-1%2F16!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
