Freelance simply means that you are not under contract or working for a specific company!.You are free to photograph what sells or what you enjoy!. Then you also have to find a buyer for your work!. It could be anybody!. A company, an organization, personal friends, schools, colleges, churches, ad companies, the list is endless!. Freelancers are "living on the edge" of this business in many cases because they have little or no guarantee of a paycheck no matter how hard they work!. Sometimes it's all about being at the right place at the right time, and then finding someone to buy the pictures!. Many photographers who work for a company will also work as a freelancer on weekends or spare time to meet their financial needs!. I have a freelance friend who travels to state and National Parks and sells his images to post card companies and travel brochure and Dept of Tourism companies!. If he doesn't sell, he doesn't eat or pay his bills!. He told me that he averages about $20,000!. a year doing this, even though it barely covers his travel and lodging expenses!. He loves the travel and sense of adventure!. He also shoots 5 or 6 weddings a year as well!.

A person who is NOT tied down to any one company for long periods of time!. A person who can "choose" what projects he/she wants to work on or not!. A person who has to accept the responsibility of doing their own taxes, running their own business, and making their own money!. A person who must "save" most of the money they make for the dry times, which WILL come!. A freelance photographer is self employed, may do a wedding one day, do a product shoot the next day, spend two days shooting stock, then the next day do senior portraits, the next day maybe a family portrait!. also may be a "stringer" for a news agency!.
