Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The first thing almost everyone will tell you is to practice!. But it seems that in your case, what you need is to try looking at things in many different ways, and see which one works best for you!. What I mean is, let's say you're trying to draw a face for a portrait!. Instead of just laying down lines and features where you think they should go, first break down the face into separate shapes, see how they relate to each other, and draw these basic shapes onto paper!. Observe shadows, bone structure, expression, and all the other fine details that make the face unique!. How far apart are the eyes, the nose, and the lips from each other!? Observe the outer space around the face to get a better understanding of how the face itself is shaped!. Study how to make hair look realistic (it isn't just a bunch of lines that make hair, you have to fill in the darks and lights)!.Then fill in details and refine them last!. This is an example for portrait drawing, but the basics are applicable to anything you might want to draw (cartoons/comics, landscapes, figures, animals, whatever)!. Spend a lot of time observing aesthetic details!. A big problem I've seen with people who find it difficult to capture certain images with their drawing is that they just jump right in to the details!. I see professional artists, on the other hand, laying down the basics piece by piece!. Really work on your observation; once you know how a line should look on your drawing paper, you should be able to lay it down!. There are a lot of tutorials on the net to help you get started, too!. Just Google what you're interested in drawing, such as "drawing realistic hair/eyes/lips" or "drawing portraits!." Try drawing mainly from life instead of photographs- you'll understand more how their are natural shadows and highlights!. Keeping a sketchbook is another good way!.
