instead of just looking at something and drawing it, you have to kind of study and memorize what something looks like before you can draw it from your head!.

so for drawing people, you kind of have to really have studied/looked at people carefully!. One thing i recommend is measuring distances between one part of the body to others!. Not with a ruler, but just in your mind!. For instance did you know your torso is about the same height as the top half of your legs!? Make simple measurements in your head, relative measurements like that one I just said!. Like "oh, eyes are near the exact middle from between the top and bottom of a head"!. That kind of thing!. Once you come up with your own rules like this, then you'll really start being able to draw off the top of your head a lot easier!.

Do that with lots of other things too!. also, drawing simple shapes like you are doing is major!. You should learn how to construct anything with shapes instead of just drawing by looking at them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think really all you need to do is just keep drawing, keep looking at things!.!.!.observe the curves, the lines and the negative space, you need to train yourself to notice these aspects in what it is you want to draw !.!.!. if you don't then you wont have any idea what to put down on paper unless you are looking at an object!.
You can always start drawing things from your head that you are very confident on the shapes contours etc such as a coffee mug, a football etc!.!.!.simple objects that you know the shapes etc of very well with out needing to look at to recreate!.!.!.slowly try with more complex objects!.
It really depends on what it is you are trying to draw!.
If it's the human form!.!.!.this takes a lot of work and even professionals use live or photo references!.!.!.try some artist anatomy books also!.
Hope this helps but essentially you need to practice a lot and look at things a lot deeper!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

basically, as one artist speaking to another, it depends on what you mean!.
you can either:
1!. not know how to draw something without looking at some sort of reference for it
or
2!. be unable to come up with an idea

for 1, I use a lot of reference photos, and practice drawing those!. Don't worry about shading too much, just try to get the main shapes of the things you want to draw!. After that, probably around the 20th full drawing of one object (like a person for example, in different poses for some variety) you'll want to start attempting to draw what you see in your head!. Just start off with basic positions, and keep away from foreshortening until you're familiar with what you are drawing!. (once again, for a person, but this can be for anything) and don't be afraid to loosely use a photo for a reference of something difficult, like a hand or a nose!. Drawing things that you see in your head takes time and practice!.

For 2, try drawing a lot of thumbnails, like quick loose sketches of what you would like to see!. They only need to be about 1" tall and are mostly a silhouette of an idea!. Don't take more than ten seconds on each one!. Pick one that you like, and try to imagine it bigger!. Once again, don't be afraid to browse photos or other peoples art for ideas!. The more you draw, the more ideas you'll get until you almost get overwhelmed!. You can also take my route, and just stare at the paper/canvas/art board for about ten minutes until it "speaks" to you and you see what you want on it!. It sounds strange, but I get some pretty good art this way!.

Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I understand exactly what you mean!. ^^ When I first began drawing I could only draw from reference but as I progressed I challenged myself alittle at a time, drawing simple still life's!. I then went through(and still am) an animal phase where I tend to draw alot of animals!. So instead of snatching a picture to reference from the Internet I went outside and watched how my neighbors dog moved and such!. I did the same when I began to draw humans!. Parents always teach their children not to stare but for art purposes, by all means stare and observe!.
also something else that helps is learn from what you draw!. Like when you draw from refrence!? Remember the little details you draw from the refrence picture and when you go to draw something similar add those details when nesscary!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

some people can do it, some people can't!. no matter how long or hard they try!.

a good exercise for you might be contour drawing!. because you need to get away from instantly comparing your image to the stroke you just made!. you will be constantly looking at your subject and not your paper!.

after you have done a sketchbook full of contours try this >
just like a contour but look at the subject (then close your eyes and draw your stroke or strokes) this process may help your brain begin to interpret lines, shapes and imagery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

take a picture of a head and try to research it!.!.!.if its really hard!.!.
i give you the side!.!.
